Hairloss

So id read about hair loss on some WLS forums prior to surgery.  It didnt seem as an important thing to worry about -as the surgery and my actual weightloss!

Oh how things change....

3 months post surgery, pretty much to the day, i started to notice more hair loss than normal - i have long hair so im used to shedding like a cat, but now it seemed like more was coming out. So for the last 3 weeks, everytime i wash my hair or brush it, im left standing with a furball in my hand.  Today i washed my hair (cue furball) then brushed it (cue furball).  Loads of hair came out!!  If i continue at this rate, im going to be in deep shit.  I am slightly panicked - there is nothing i can do about it.  I wonder how long this will go on for?

My hair was one of the few things i liked about myself pre-op, and now im really freaking out because its just falling out! (see pics)

The science bit...

The normal cycle of hair growth lasts for 2 to 3 years. Each hair grows approximately 1 centimeter per month during this phase. About 90 percent of the hair on your scalp is growing at any one time. About 10 percent of the hair on your scalp, at any one time, is in a resting phase. After 3 to 4 months, the resting hair falls out and new hair starts to grow in its place.

It is normal to shed some hair each day as part of this cycle. However, some people may experience excessive (more than normal) hair loss.

Sudden hair loss is known as Telogen Effluvium and is usually abrupt and expected in majority of post surgery cases.

Useful website

Now does this reassure me?  No.  But i guess i should be taking my vitamins more regularly (i always forget zoinks!)  Also ive got to up my protein, ive became a little lazy in terms of ensuring im hitting 70-80 grams of protein a day.  I think next week im getting back on www.myfitnesspal.com so i can monitor my protein intake.

I also read somewhere that a brazil nut contains your GDA of selenium (also helpful in hairloss), so think im going to have to grab me a bag!

Will keep you updated on the hair situation!

  2. Mine did too but then it grew back when my weight loss slowed. 2 years out my hair is fine and the weight is gone so hold onto that and don't worry about it :-) Jane x
